It just gets rainier and rainier here. To the point where I've finally convinced myself to get a pair of rain boots. I'm thinking a pair of Hunter boots in navy blue, but I'm still thinking on it. It seems like a wild investment, but at this point - probably the best one I could make. My mother called me at 7:30 this morning to chat about floods ... that's occasion enough for expensive footwear.
I thought today would be appropriate to share some illustrations of pretty ferns that came from the Meehan's Monthly books...
Whitened Cloak Fern
. . .
Claytons Flowering Fern
. . .
Bladder Fern
. . .
Lady Fern
. . .
Goldies Shield Fern
. . .
Borded Shield Fern
. . .
Killarney Fern
. . .
Marsh Shield Fern
. . .
Mountain Spleenwort
(okay, so I don't think this could technically be considered a fern, but it does look nice with the other anyway!)
. . .
Peters Hair Fern
. . .
I'm sure the ferns in the forests around here are looking gigantic and healthy - unlike my button fern I have at home... sad story about that thing. It was in ICU and underwent major surgery when I forgot to water it for a few days (ie I had to cut all but three stems out because the leaves were dry and crackling off) but then I brought it back to life with new little sprouts and it was looking okay for about a week or so, but it's starting to look sickly again. I think I'm going to give up custody and hand it over to be with other plant friends on Alice's porch. And no one can forget to water it because it's surely doing enough of that outside anyway!

i like ferns. but i also have one teetering on the brink of death on my windowsill. brownish dry leaves, i sense a amputation is necessary. oh dear..
Love the first! Something about the colors
My bright yellow Hunter boots are one of my favorite recent purchases. I say go for it! Having fun rain boots always makes those dreary rainy days seem a little bit more cheerful.
Oh that first drawing is just gorgeous! And I have some blue hunters, they were definitely worth it. (Although I did actually get discount because a farmer friend bought them.) My sister bought some lovely red ones to wear with frocks, and they are also beautiful.
yes!! {possibly} my favorite plant!
goodness me, i have wanted a pair of hunters for the longest time because, when winter comes, i'm more concerned with moisture than i am with the temperature of me feet. that's what grandma's hand-knitted socks are for!
i just had a thought, these images would make such lovely wall paper!
Oh I love these! Ferns are such pretty delicate things. I would love to see them integrated in more designs for clothing or accessories. :)
Ferns are so fussy! But also so pretty. I have a Button Fern too, so I know where you're coming from. Also: thumbs up on rain boots. I bought a pair several years ago and it was one of the best purchases I've ever made. I don't have to worry about wrecking my good vintage shoes, they sort of go with everything by default and I can walk right through puddles, which is actually pretty fun. :)
ferns are so lovely and dreamy. my entire back yard is full of them.
Love them, especially the first picture. Thanks and Happy Fourth.
The immense variety is breathtakingly beautiful... Gorgeous Xxxc
Oh hai! Ummm, I gave you an award, you nut!!
It's the "One Lovely Blog" award...I posted about it here! http://thecatspajamasblog.blogspot.com/2009/07/blushin.html

I have recently decided to get a pair of rain boots too. I discovered this year that none of my footwear is water proof. Not even my good winter boots anymore. i want to splurge on Hunter's too. I think the classic green ones are what I am going to go with but I like the navy blue too. We also just talked about ferns in my botany class so i am glad you posted them!
Spleenwort! Plants have such wonderful names :)
i love the colours.

Oh my, they're so pretty. Make me want to go for a long walk in a forest, preferably one full of life with green canopies hanging everywhere!
i've been looking to thrift a pair of old billy boots for a bit now too! montreal is in about the same wet condition!
i think i like Peter's Hair Fern the best of all! Partly on account of its name being so darn cute and partly cause I think the picture is just about the best!
i bought myself a pair of hunter boots in navy a few years back and finally bought the fleece insoles this year so i can wear them with tights in the cold. they're amazing!
