2 Months !

Today is Westley's 2 month adoption birthday! I can't believe it's been 2 months already!! To celebrate I bought him a new stuffed pheasant toy and some treats that are okay for his special allergy diet. He eats duck and potatoes (in pup food form) for every meal and I wanted to go out and get some real duck for him tonight, but maybe we'll put on the ritz for his 1 year!

Ultimate Scoundrel

If you follow me on flickr, I apologize now because the following photos are old news. And if you don't really like dogs, then I also apologize because the following post is full of photos of a certain little white scrapper dog!

Aww I love him! I'm not even much of a dog person--I can call cats from afar but I'm so unsure and skittish around dogs!--but he is just irresistible!

Did you check the airline's website for information about traveling with pets? http://virginamerica.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/virginamerica.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=88&p_created=1164400995&p_sid=KOg4*N2k&p_accessibility=0&p_redirect=&p_lva=&p_sp=cF9zcmNoPTEmcF9zb3J0X2J5PSZwX2dyaWRzb3J0PSZwX3Jvd19jbnQ9MTM2LDEzNiZwX3Byb2RzPTAmcF9jYXRzPSZwX3B2PSZwX2N2PSZwX3BhZ2U9MSZwX3NlYXJjaF90ZXh0PXRyYXZlbGluZyB3aXRoIHBldHM*&p_li=&p_topview=1. When I moved I flew out with my dog and they had a lot of restrictions about type of kennel, but she was in cargo.

kater - i know how much you love cats, so I really love that you love him!

caroline - adopting a pup has been one of the best choices I've made in a long time! I hope you find your dream dog soon enough!

mariel - thank you!

reilly - thanks for the link, I've definitely looked at that more than a few times. I've seriously done more research on this and looked at so many websites/message boards and it seems like it's all going to depend on who's working that day. How did your dog hold up in cargo?

Such a cutie! Dog posts are always appreciated. ;)
I'm not what it is like in the US but in the UK they are very strict about meeting the travel kennel/crate sizing.
More shocking is that staff will usually coo and allow people to take young pups out during the flight but get antsy if you have an older dog that also needs a little room.
I hope you have good people on the day. And don't worry too much about other passengers, how many times does everyone have to endure a crying baby?

We've traveled to Europe a couple of times with cats and while I'm sure dogs are a bit different to travel with, some things may be the same.

The change of pressure during landing seems to be really hard on animals, so don't be surprised if he whines more or even drools a lot. It's sad that at this time, he'll have to under the seat, but at least you can hold his carrier on your lap through most of the flight.

Try to get him to a bathroom break as soon as possible when you deplane or you might end up with a smelly and embarrassing mess in the carrier. Speaking from experience on this one.^^;

In general though, I think that dogs travel better than cats and I'm sure that Westley is just going to be happy to be with you where ever you go.:)

Aww, he's soo cute! I have 2 Westies - one I've had for about 6 years, and I just (like, 5 days ago) adopted a 3-y.o. Westie who was just completely neglected by his previous owners. He has all sorts of skin issues, and is truly just learning how to be a dog - but he's wonderful! Westies are so smart and fun! :)

He is soo adorable! Good luck on the plane ride. You are lucky you are able to keep him in the cabin, most planes here in canada put them in cargo :(

Oh my--I am in love! He is the cutest, sweetest thing I've ever seen.

Sorry, no experience flying with a dog. I do know your vet should be able to give you what we call "puppy Prozac," a mild sedative to calm him. We give it to our Lucy when we leave her alone at home or when there are loud storms, both of which stress her out.

My mom just flew out to SF with her dog who looks about Westley's size. She had her in a kennel under the seat and it was fine. The doggy whined a bit but the passengers felt more sorry for the pup than annoyed. I have a toddler and when I fly with him I bring a big bag of earplugs for the other passengers, they seem to appreciate it and I get fewer dirty looks. Good luck!

myloveasdeep said...

I traveled with my cat, who is only slightly smaller than Westley. I had him in the cabin and it was pretty hellacious. The vet gave me knockout pills for him which made him be still at least, but I had to give him one every few hours. He also started to smell terrible because he was scared. Also, I had to take him out of the carrier to get through security and I was so afraid he would take off!

All in all, if I was to do it again, I'd put him in cargo. This is because even though I would be so worried about him, he would not feel so squished in that tiny carrier and would be less stressed overall, I think.

DO NOT go without doggy sleepy pills.

See if the vet can give you a pill to calm him during the flight. They generally will for pets going on long trips so they won't stress out.

He's so cute!

He is so cute!! I've taken my boston terrier on a 3 hour flight in the past (he was a puppy). My vet gave us some sleepy pill so he was just taking a long nap. You can take him for a long walk so that he will be tired on the flight. I also made a doggy popsicle (dog cookie + peanut butter or butter mixed will and freeze it, messy...take some wipes:)) I guess they love it and takes forever for them to finish. Does he like a car ride? Mine loves car rides so he is just fine with any type of rides:) Good luck and have a good vacation!!

what a sweetie!!

I have a dachshund (11 lbs and looong) and he's flown quite a bit. I've never been on Virgin, but in my experience, I just push his carrier underneath the seat in front of me. His bag is a bit too big as well, but as long as the aisle is clear, the flight attendants are cool. I don't feed or give him much water before the flight...waaahhh, I feel terrible, but I fly from CA to IN so I can't take any chances!

Check to make sure the airline allows dogs on the plane. The ones that do will charge a lil bit extra. I don't recommend checking any animal as cargo!! My dog doesn't make a peep - I think the noise, air pressure, (um, being trapped in a bag?) makes him a bit confused but he's totally fine flying. I usually just leave him in the bag and pet his head, but sometimes the flight attendants let you hold yr dog in yr lap...depends on the crew. I know that some vets recommend tranquilizers, but your dog is little so sometimes the dosage can be too much for his size.

I hope this helps - don't sweat it! I've never had a bad experience - the people around me usually love my dog!

Yay for a cute doggy post!!! :) I have so enjoyed seeing all the pictures of Westley pop up on Flickr--he is so adorable! :)

Although I haven't had experience flying with pets, on our last flight from Southern CA to FL, there was a man with a dog on part of the flight. The dog was pretty well behaved for being stuck on a plane for over 5 hours! I think the man kept him in his carrier most of the time, although he may have opened it during on of our layovers (we had one of those nice/annoying flights with short layovers so we couldn't get off! :p). But I would have never know he had a dog with him if I hadn't heard him talking to the stewardess about it! ;) Hope your travel with Westley goes smoothly...

Oh, and happy 2-month adoption anniverssary!! :)

I just adopted a dog, and I was so happy about her one week anniversary yesterday, so I totally understand being excited about 2 months!

I've never traveled on planes with my dogs, but we did have to travel in a few long car trips for moving and we just gave them benadryl. Knocked em right out!

I flew with my sister and her chihuahua before. On the way their the stewardesses loved Mimi, and let her sit on my sisters lap the whole time! However, on the way back home the other stewardesses made her put Mimi in her carrier. She was fine. Westley is so cute I'm sure it won't be a problem! Have fun

You can fly with dogs in the cabin in the US?!?! Wow, that must make for some fun travel experiences!! Good luck ;) We flew my dog from Sydney to Hobart but she had to go "Excess Baggage" in a large cage. When she arrived she was TRAUMATISED and the trauma had apparently caused her to lose control of her, ahem, bowels. Poor thing. Worth it to be reunited with her family though!

Well first of all i wanted to thank you for choosing to adopt... and especially an older gentleman dog! :)

i used to work at an animal shelter (::sigh:: i miss it) and the older folks there are difficult to adopt out from time to time... they love just as much as a puppy!

my sister has two little pups (of the Mexican variety)who have traveled with her often...

she has a soft carrier which fit under the seat comfortably... and she said they were a bit nervous during the ride but didn't make a peep.

probably nervous and would rather go unnoticed.. :)

so cute!! I love this dog :)

I've traveled with my dog (Fox Terrier) multiple times between the USA and Europe.

Make sure you check the weight regulations with the airlines - for me, the dog AND the bag she's in has to be less or equal to 8 kilos (roughly... 16 pounds!). Of course, my dog has been a little bit over the limit and the check in people couldn't care less.

As for flying, you should be fine. See if your vet can prescribe a pill to calm Westley down. If not, I know there are some natural herb stuff which can also relax the dog (I used to use this when my dog was only a puppy).

Westley is VERY cute, so hopefully no one will be angry at you. I don't think you can put Westley on your lap in case someone on the airplane is really allergic to dogs - however, take off and landing can be EXTREMELY scary for pets! My suggestion is to open the bag a little bit, enough that you can fit your hand in there and pet him! :)

Last, I really discourage of putting your dog in the cargo. It's really terrifying for pets, really loud and such. I would avoid it at all cost since Westley is small enough!

Congrats on the 2 month adoption date! :)

Cutest. Dog. Ever.

Seriously. I can't get over how adorable he is. His ears! His sweet eyes. His disheveled fur. I can hardly stand it!

Have a safe trip. Hope all goes well.

Marcheline said...

I was a flight attendant for USAirways, and I can tell you the rules we had:

1. If a pet carrier did not fit under the seat in front of you, an additional seat ticket must be purchased or the pet has to ride in the baggage hold.

2. If an animal is traveling in the cabin, it must remain inside the carrier for the entire trip. This is for health and insurance reasons, as some people are allergic to animals and if the animal bites someone, there will be lawsuits out the yin-yang.

My suggestion, if you intend to fly with Westley, would be to either get a carrier that you are positive will fit under the seat, or get a hard-sided carrier that will afford Westley more protection should he have to fly in the cargo hold. It's not safe to put an animal in cargo in a soft-sided carrier, as the bags can slide around during turbulence.

If you want my REAL suggestion, send your family pictures of Westley, tell them they are welcome to come to your house to visit him in person, and get a dog sitter for Westley while you visit your folks. Westley will be happier.

I'm not exaggerating he is the cutest west highland terrier of them all!

Not sure if you've gotten the answers you were looking for but I've flown with various pets in the last 6 years. Once with a Cat (9lbs) and several times with my 2 chihuahuas (one is 3lbs one is 7lbs). So let me know if you have any questions for me! otherwise have a safe trip!

Good luck getting him through the airplane ride! He is honestly SO cute.

Lisa Falzon said...

Aww so very sweet.

Dogs hate travelling though... especially on a plane. There are endless amounts of things that could go wrong. I would spare him the trauma and find him nice kennels instead.

In Europe it's quite hard to do air travel with pets, they will need to be fully sedated by a vet before putting them in a carrier if they're small, and the same with large ones only they go to the hold.
