The search is on!

June 1970

This is my mum at the tender age of 19. Looking like a total beach babe and I can't get over how dang cute she was. I've had this photo scanned in for a long time - but it somehow disappeared (I could have sworn it was on flickr!) I finally found it today in the depths of my hard drive.

It's funny - as I'm getting a little older I feel like I'm finally figuring out my personal style. And I've also realized my mum has been my biggest influence. From the way she dressed when she was my age to the things I surround myself with in my apartment. My lace dress obsession definitely comes from her... that's just the start of it. And you know, all of those funny little things she used to tell me that I would just shrug off are finally clicking in. (right now it's been to wear more shades of pink and white and to keep my hair long!) I guess this is what happens when you grow up a little bit.

Well, anyway - after looking at this photo for a little while I realized my mom has the most AMAZING tote bag in existence. Creamy white, with the perfect shade of dark brown leather crisscross straps... And so my search is on for a bag like this. I'm hoping my mom can clue me in to where she got it/what brand it was - but in the mean time, if any of you lovely ladies find something similar in your internet/real life searches - please, please let me know!!! (I'll also take a navy blue/white dot bikini like that but I'm not pushing my luck!)

Your mom is adorable!!!! I know what you mean about taking inspiration when you don't even know it. I think I've really taken a page from my mom's style and I think she's the most beautiful, stylish person I have known and still know and will know. When I went back to visit my relative in China they told me that their first memory of my mom was showing up at my dad's family's house in a lily white sweater and everyone remembered it even thought it was nearly 30 years ago because in the late 60s in China no one wore white sweaters, everyone sort of just wore utilitarian clothing in drab colors, and reading your post made me remember this and how I love white sweaters and wearing white in winter and how that probably was somehow mystically passed on to me from my mom.

(PS--her bikini is the cutest! I so wish bathing suit makers would make two pieces in that style--it's so flattering!)

Adorable photo. Maybe you could try Alchemy on Etsy.

This photo doesn't look 40 years old! It looks so contemporary.

Great photo! It is crazy, whenever I ask my mom about something fabulous she had it was usually hand made. A great bag like that would be "just a little something I had". That kind of style and quality was sort of expected?
Imagine that!?!
Good luck...let us know what you find!

Great picture. And I agree you mom is adorable. The bag is nice but that bathing suit is amazing! I'll be on the lookout for both.

Gap actually had a very similar bag about 3 years ago. No cross straps, but otherwise very similar.

Wow--you're mom has such style! :) That bag is really nice; hope you can find one that fits the bill.

I think that is so lovely that you take a lot of fashion inspiration from your mom! I know mine has been one of my biggest influences, even though my style has definitely developed into a more theatrical/romantic look. She tends to be more classic/preppy (it really suits her), but I learned a lot from her about dressing and share her love of fun accessories.

Believe it or not, I bookmarked this tote recently, and I think that it's almost identical to the one your mom had: http://www.unruly-things.com/2010/05/crossed-tote.html

Hope this helps!

I stumbled across a few on the UO site. Although, none are near as adorable and classic as your mother's. http://www.urbanoutfitters.com/urban/catalog/productdetail.jsp?itemdescription=true&itemCount=80&startValue=81&selectedProductColor=&sortby=&id=17887621&parentid=TRENDS_SUMMER2010WALL&sortProperties=+subCategoryPosition,&navCount=63&navAction=jump&color=&pushId=TRENDS_SUMMER2010WALL&popId=TRENDS_SUMMER2010VIEWALL&prepushId=&selectedProductSize=

Take care, love.
