Libris Lunaria

I want to introduce you to a new project my boyfriend and I have been working on together over the past few weeks...

. . . Libris Lunaria . . .

It's only an empty etsy shop right now - but in just a few weeks it'll be filled with beautiful, high quality reproductions of some of our favorite book images. Some that that we've been squirreling away, and some that I've shared on this blog. I always loved reading comments about how pretty the 'what genus are you' images would be framed on a wall and it's lovely to be able to make that happen now! (And to be able to selfishly print out pretty pictures for my own decorating purposes!)

We're starting out with 5"x7" prints carefully curated from images in the public domain. Special findings for your favorite spaces - either by themselves or in a collection. The shop will have a fine selection of horticulture, botany, science, astronomy, fauna, children's illustrations, and all eye catching things in between! A little something for everyone!

The prints will be made with rich pigment inks and printed on heavy weight matte paper. Packaged in clear plastic sleeves and shipped in rigid fiberboard mailers. Gussied up as if receiving a care package from a far away friend.

While Paul and I (and Westley too!) make like little worker bees to get everything in its place for our shop opening in 2-4 weeks, we wanted to offer pre-sales at a special rate!

Particulars:
- Normal shop price on prints is $12 each.
We decided to go with a heavier weight paper and the price will be $15 each.
$3 flat rate first class shipping to US, $3.50 to Canada, $5 to everywhere else.

- Pre-sale orders will be paid for through paypal.
Once the shop is stocked and you'd like to make your selection, simply check out through etsy as normal but don't submit payment!

- Your pre-order will never expire and you can place your order at any time.
Feel free to split up your order, but please note that shipping is only covered for the first order.

- Pre-sale orders may be purchased from September 7th until September 17th
by using the handy little paypal checkout options below:

9/20 UPDATE - Thanks to all the lovely folks who have pre-ordered prints! We hope to have the shop up and running later this week/early next week!

Please feel free to email us with any questions at librislunaria@gmail.com

Brilliant, brillant idea. Can't wait to get me some flowers.

Cindy- No copyrights on 99% of antique illustrations. Hence Francesca's wiki link on documents in the public domain.

i also wonder about copyright laws? be careful. i'm sure you have put this to thought and gotten permission, it really is a wonderful idea =)

Cindy and Anonymous - in the US, any work published before 1923 is in the public domain. Everything from Francesca's collection will be from the public domain by virtue of pre-1923 publication.

Cindy and M - Thanks for the feedback on this particular issue... Making sure there's a clear cut answer to the copyright question is going to be important when laying the bricks later on in our shop/website.

Part of the reason we're confident in starting this project is because Paul has had his share of professional experience working with these exact types of materials (he's been with archive.org for over 5 years!) ... And legality concerns come up frequently from folks outside of the organization. The general rule is that if something was published before 1923, then the copyright has expired, which makes it part of the public domain. Not to get all nerdy, but that's a pretty lovely thing because it then allows people to share, re-distribute, sell, etc, etc things that might otherwise be forgotten.

I hope there'll be prints from "Histoire naturelle des dorades de la Chine"! And congratulations on this great idea.

Wow, these prints are going to be quite awesome. I know a few peeps who would enjoy these!

So we'd be paying for your careful curation and inkjet printing then? The idea is lost on me since all the images or similar ones are publicly available for free already (NYPL's online archives, for instance). I'd be more thrilled if you were unearthing and selling originals.

Such a fantastic idea, can't wait to see all of the prints (and order a few to decorate my sadly bare walls with..!)

Stella, thanks for the request!! it's good to know what folks want to see in the shop!

Liz, thanks for your feedback. I know reproduction is a polarizing subject... I usually prefer the originals of things rather then their reproductions... But, with books I think the lovely thing about taking images from the public domain is that the original books are still safely intact. No pages cut, no bindings broken.

We hope we didn't make the idea seem like it was revolutionary. Clearly, anyone can scour the public domain for images they love and get them printed (either by themselves or from a print shop). We're looking through hundreds of books and attempting to form an aesthetic that we like and hope others appreciate. We want to share things we love with people and we think we can add enough value to turn that into something more then a blog post.

Hooray! I'm so excited for this! I think it's such a wonderful idea, and I always love what you find so I can't wait to see what treasures you dig up! That's what I think is so great about this...there are thousands and thousands of antique illustrations out there in the big ol' world, there's no way we can each uncover every single little wonder, so it's nice being able to share our findings with each other and see things that we haven't uncovered before! Prepare yourself for some orders-- this dorm room of mine has quite a bit of wall space! xx
