Writing this last post has been like having a little storm cloud hanging over my shoulders. Saying goodbye has never been easy, and it's especially difficult when the past (almost) 4 years with this dumdum blog have been so strangely great.

It's hard not to turn into a total sap about this kind of stuff, but change is good. And more importantly, we have some introductions to make! .. So, I'll skip the sentimental rambling and hope you'll follow along with me here, my new online shop and journal of sorts.

For now, I hope to put all my efforts into Lawrence (and the idea of turning it into a real brick and mortar shop one day), but once in a while I'll be posting personal photos here .

And thank you to Amy Merrick, for taking mostly all of the photos -- and for just being generally and genuinely awesome and amazing.

I've never been good with changes, but my 25th birthday is on the horizon and I think it's the perfect time to call it quits for The Snail and The Cyclops / 1385

The particulars haven't been ironed out quite yet, but I'm in the process of creating a new space for myself on the internet. I'll still be selling vintage, and I'll still be taking photos of the old junk I find - it's just time for something different.

I'll be sure to post the formalities, url, etc. here once everything is in place.

Until then - I'll be temporarily re-opening 1385 sometime next week with a mix of things that aren't quite right for the new shop.

Packing is a truly miserable experience... especially towards the end of it. But, I do appreciate finding all the things I've lost, or just totally forgotten about.. These detachable collars and 20s boudoir sashes are all things I had carefully tucked away in my closet.... A most welcomed distraction from playing moving box Tetris finding just the right spot for every little thing.

Shop Vacations + One Last Flea Sale

I leave for the East Coast on the 29th ... just a teeny bit over a week away. I'm still in major denial that we're moving... I've packed a total of 4 or 5 boxes .... Guuuhhhaaahhhh ... Too crazy.... It's cool though, everything will get done!

In the mean time - here's a boring post about shop vacations / sales / etc ...

Libris Lunaria
The shop is closing on Friday evening (5.20) until July/August (basically whenever we find a place in Brooklyn and get settled)

Print Orders - We're accepting only 10 more between now and Friday evening.

Fox Totes - I have 20 totes left and was planning on stashing them away to sell at markets ... but I think I'll keep re-listing them until the shop closes. I won't be re-printing these, so if you were thinking about getting one - now is definitely the time!

New Totes - I'm going to be getting a new image printed, but I can't decide what should be next - The Hare or The Seahorse .... Leave a comment and let me know your pick!

Thirteen Eighty-Five
I'll be putting the shop into vacation mode Friday evening (5.20) -- hopefully reopening sometime in early June - I have a few boxes worth of stuff I've been stashing away so hopefully the hiatus won't be for very long. It'll be nice to reopen with completely new things!!

So starting now - the good 'ol Flea Market Sale is happening - everything needs to find a home, and what's left over will go to some of the second hand shops on Haight....

Some disposable camera snaps from a dog walk last weekend. The edge of Nob Hill and Chinatown. I really loved that sewing machine repair shop. They had a bunch of beautiful antique machines with painted flowers on them (much like this one) lined up in the front window, but the glare made it impossible to take pictures of.

I wandered into Rugby a few months ago and was really surprised at how good their Spring '11 collection was. Seemingly perfect 30s reproduction pieces (with real shell buttons!) and not one embroidered skull to mess things up. The online styling was, well - totally horrendous ... these wool trousers went on sale (just a teeny bit) but after thinking about them for weeks and weeks, I couldn't say no. They'll be just the perfect thing to wear with lace blouses come warmer days.

We're moving to NY this summer. Which is crazy to think about. We'll be leaving SF at the end of May, and then bunkering down in MA until we find our dream apartment in Brooklyn. (which basically means anything other then an over-priced crack den. Maybe tin ceilings, good natural light, and a claw foot tub if the apartment universe realllllly loves us)

I've been half excited / half terrified about everything since I found out it was happening for real - but these photos of Siri in Brooklyn are making me a little more excited. There's something very New York about them - which I know is a funny thing to say, because I can't exactly explain what I mean ... but. They're good. Really good. And I hope our apartment will be half as pretty as this one.

My friend Alicia is back in town until the end of the month and it's been really nice having her to drag around while looking for old junk. I've found every single thing in all of the pictures while she was with me (including that bunch of ranunculus from Whole Foods, which is definitely the prettiest set of colors to ever come from a grocery store)

Some to keep, and some to sell -- and then there's a nice pile of 30s dresses that are too big for me but I'm hoarding them away until I feel ready to let them go...

Yesterday Ashley and I spent the day snapping shop photos for Fancy Fine + 1385 ... I stole this perfect pretend 40s dress from her shop stock and I think it's exactly the kind of dress I want to be wearing all day everyday... These pictures are from our walk to Bourbon + Branch -- the best place to be at 6 o'clock on a weeknight... things are always better by candle light!

The Sunday before I left for my East Coast trip I had quite the proper CA send off in the form of flowers!

Meggy is one of the sweetest people I know and I feel really lucky that I was able to take a class with her and the sweet gals of Studio Choo.

So happy that Meggy snapped some photos while the class was taking place... it was a pretty perfect way to spend a rainy Sunday morning!! And here's Alethea and Jill's blog post of all the arrangements from the class ... I wonder if you can pick me and Meggy's handiwork out from the bunch?

I took about 50 zillion photos of the flowers when I got home - so, there's more to come!

Fox Totes!

Very excited about two things:

These Libris Lunaria Fox totes, that I've been wanting to make since we opened the shop in the fall!!! I'm a big fan of tote bags and it's awesome to be able to make my own! Fingers crossed you'll take to them kindly - I'm hoping we can eventually make more bags with different images - like - astronomy and sea creates!!!

And then there's also the strange acquisition of these practically perfect (to me) sailor jeans via an unassuming army surplus store in Berkeley for a cool 15 clams... I've been trying to find a pair of sailor jeans since 2004 and I think the process of trying on so many pairs that wouldn't even get over my hips made me come to hate pants and jeans. When I lived in Burlington, VT I'd go to Old Gold and grab stacks and stacks of denim. I'd try on 4 pairs of the same size and each one would fit differently - so I decided to call it quits and gave up the hope that I'd ever find a pair that met the following criteria: fits in the waist, looked okay through the hip, and weren't flood pants. These are almost perfect except for a few nitpicky things - but I'm happy to have some measurements to go off of to buy more and more (on ebay?) because they're the perfect solution for short blouses!!

1385 Updates

Lomo shots of Ashley around her pretty apartment building, and some filler shots of SF I had to take to finish the roll. She's wearing the rest of the 1385 blouses I mentioned in my previous post. As soon as I find my camera cord those will be on etsy. There's some really pretty detailing on the blouses that got blurred out by the film - the pink and white blouses are especially nice!!

I've been wanting to take photos at my grandmother's house for a very, very long time - my grandmother passed away almost 3 years ago and the house has been empty ever since. I've talked to Jeff about doing a photo project there - but I think I've been too overwhelmed by wanting to find clothing that was special enough.. My parent's are working towards cleaning/renting it out and I knew it was basically now or never. These simple 80s silk blouses are somewhat of a departure from the normal shop stock, but it's nice to do something a bit different. And simple is good, especially when it involves silk - and my best bud and his beautiful new 5d Mark II.

Jeff and I ran out of light as the afternoon dwindled away - there were more blouses and rooms to photograph. Luckily Ashley is helping me with the blouses tomorrow, and I plan on dragging Jeff back in March to photograph the rooms we couldn't get to.
All of these will be trickling into the shop throughout the day.

I found this funny little Valentine with Alice at one of my favorite NH antique malls!! I wish every card ever made had mechanical (or pop up) abilities!

Oh, and a very Happy Birthday to my dear old Dad! That's him and my mum in the early 70s - 37 years later and those birds are still married!

Findings

A few scenes and some of the special things I squirreled away for myself at my grandmother's house.

A floral china set, my favorite curtains in my favorite room. A set of plastic red roses - also in my favorite room. An old summer vacation souvenir from the N.J. Aquarium - there's a tiny light bulb hidden behind the shell but the chord is in crumbles. The oldest piece of clothing I've found in my grandmother's house (which is surprising because she seemingly saved everything) a late 1930s smock coat, it's filthy and needs to be mended in more places then I can count - but I can't wait to wear this with my Lyell shorts come summer time. A nice floral paper box, that used to hold manicure supplies. A stash of dairy cups hidden inside a cabinet that probably hadn't been opened in a very long time. A box of metal letters I asked my grandmother for about 5 years ago, but for some reason she was emotionally attached to them and in her crazy old lady ways, hid them in her house - I've been searching ever since and finally, finally found it tucked away in the basement. And a favorite tapestry covered chair that's tucked away in the basement and is taking on ghost qualities due to my unsteady hand.

I helped my mum start an etsy shop selling some of the things we've pulled out of there - you can find it here - and I plan on adding more things in March when I go back!

Winter

I'm back in San Francisco, if only for a mere month - and then I'm heading back to Massachusetts again. Cleaning out my grandmother's house turned out to be more overwhelming then I could have imagined. Basically, no matter how many times I think I've uncovered all that there is to be uncovered, I manage to find more stuff I can't let anyone else have. On the next trip I'm going to have to find myself a storage unit for all the furniture and boxes... maybe two? Shoot, could even be three... I have some photos to share of some of this trip's favorite finds...

The weather will hopefully be a teeny bit warmer in MA come March - but I'm sure Spring will still be taking it's merry little time to show up - most likely my suitcase will have the same things that I brought in January....

The very best winter socks I've ever owned. Picked up at Department 17, a new men's shop that's a close walk from my apartment. I seriously wore these socks every day without washing them for 2 weeks. I guess that's probably gross, but I couldn't bear to take them off my feet, which are habitually cold - bad circulation...

These shearling lined Bean Boots I picked up at the L.L. Bean outlet store were a life saver. I have a pair of Sorels that are perfect for snow storms - but on days when the snow has been shoveled and you're just running out to the car - they're perfect. Also pretty nice duo with those Woolrich socks.

This sweater - one of the great loves of my life. Found in my grandmother's house when I was in high school. It has a nice floppy collar and pockets with the nicest wooden buttons (which have mostly fallen off at this point). It's acrylic, which normally I try to stay away from - but it's so thick and soft and machine washable and I don't even mind.

This 70s plaid flannel shirt from La Meow Vintage was on my back for 3 days straight, including sleeps too. So soft/warm.

A St. James Shirt which is perfect for layering with warm undershirts, a red scarf I knitted a few months back, and mittens from J.Crew I might have demolished while attempting to shovel my parent's roof, erh and that day my mom and I were cleaning out my grandmother's attic and there was no oil in the boiler...

Guuuh, I'm so behind in keeping things updated over here. It's so cold in MA and I feel like I'm buried under too much snow with the flaky/dry skin only a New England Winter can give you.. It seems strange posting these photos from an awesome pretend Summer afternoon hang out a few weeks ago.. But it's nice to look back on these pictures because the weather really was perfect that day - and it's always awesome getting to walk around the city with Sonja!!

The last picture is my favorite joker pose. I feel like I've been getting increasingly more awkward in front of a camera - the easiest way to handle that is by acting like a true dumb dumb. Usually with my eyes closed and my hair covering my face. It's like I'm 9 years old all over again.

Shop stuff and a Flea Market Sale

I leave tomorrow night for a 2 week East Coast arctic tundra winter wonderland getaway. I'll be spending my days hanging with my sweet baby nephew Landon who was born this morning!!, helping my parent's clean out my grandmother's house, making Jeff help me with 1385 shop photos, dragging Alice to antique stores, drinking as much Honey Dew iced coffee as I possibly can, and most likely cursing my cold bones since it's been in the mid to high 60s here for the past week and I've happily gotten used to California winter.

So, I wanted to do a little update on what's going on with 1385 and Libris Lunaria while I'm away - any orders placed tomorrow before 2:00 PM Pacific will be shipped before I leave. I'm leaving both shops open while I'm away but won't be able to ship until 2/10

The Libris Lunaria shop is having a sale on the antique floral lithos - It's supposed to end today, but we might as well keep it going until tomorrow!

1385 is having a flea market sale starting right now and ending tomorrow (Tuesday, 1-25) at 1:00 PM Pacific!
I bought quite a bit of things over the weekend and I plan on taking all of it with me to photograph and hopefully add to the shop while I'm in MA.

For any new readers, here are the Flea Market Sale Particulars:

- From now until tomorrow (Tuesday, 1-25) at 1:00 PM Pacific send me a message with an offer price. I'll write you back and either accept that price or offer a different one. If you agree on that price then I'll reserve the Item for you!

Spent another really nice day with Phoebe, pawing around old junk, traipsing around overgrown muddy pathways in suede shoes, and shoving ham and cheese croissants down our gullets .. (and maybe sharing a little ham with Westley)

Glen Canyon Park is so pretty, and I only got to see maybe 1/4 of it... I have to get back there so I can explore the rest of it and not worry about my silly shoes getting ruined!

I need to do a little gushing about one of my favorite San Francisco girls! Phoebe was one of the very, very first people I met when I got to SF and I knew it was love almost immediately. On top of being insanely sweet, and so easy to talk to - she has the most beautiful collection of vintage and antique clothing - most of which her, or her sweet mum found at the thrifts. And dang, that girl can layer and accessorize better then anyone else I've ever seen. It's always like she's stepped out of a really, really good editorial.

Yesterday I spent a really nice afternoon with her which included some pup walking, 1385 photo snapping, coffee drinking, dress shopping, and a bit of daydreaming about future project collaborations! While we were hanging around in front of Hooker's I had to snap some photos of her outfit.

She found her jacket at La Rosa, it's from the 1920s and it's probably one of the most beautifully made things I've ever seen. The construction details are amazing!! Gaaah, and that shawl collar cardigan is vintage boy's Burberry (found at GOODWILL)

(Phoebe doesn't have a blog, but I think slowly but surely it'll happen! I'm trying to get her to at least start a tumblr... I know this girl has a lot of great things to share!!)

Hooker's Sweet Treats

So very happy that Hooker's Sweet Treats is only a few blocks away from my apartment! I don't get there nearly as often as I should - but every time I stop in it's hard to leave.

Do you remember me gushing on and on about the sea salted caramels at The Perish Trust? Well, the kind fella who makes them opened up his own sweet shop serving up bread pudding, cheddar biscuits, praline cookies, and the most excellent coffee drinks. The first time I stopped in was on my birthday over the summer and since then I've spent a few nice coffee chats with Emily, Ashley - and today with my bud Phoebe. Everything is always delicious and they really did a perfect job with the interior - I think it might just be one of my favorite places to visit in San Francisco!

SF Tourist Day, Pt. 2

Unfortunately one of my favorite games to look at was out of order, a woodland animal shoot 'em up type thing that's really hard to play - but the bunnies and foxes are so cute it totally doesn't matter. One of the nicest parts about of all the places we visited was that everything was free! Well, besides our burgers and fries... and the games we played at the Musée... But even so, most of the games are only 1-2 quarters, and there's so many people putting quarters into different machines you can totally stand off to the side and watch and then use your quarters on the really good stuff, like pinball!

If you're interested in visiting the Musée and plan on using the photobooth, my only advice is to make sure you set aside some of your dollar bills before cashing them in for quarters, there's 2 film booths and they don't take quarters! (It's $3 per strip of 4 photos)

Alice and Studio Choo

These flowers were a surprise from my best girl, Alice. I was sick with a stupid cold a few weeks back and missing family something terrible and then I got a mysterious call from Studio Choo one morning and the next thing I knew, these were at my door!

Thy came in a big mason jar with a green velvet and lace ribbon. And to top it off, a cursive typewritten note!!

Sausalito

This outfit is from last week - a little afternoon trip to Sausalito. The main street was so crowded with tourists we decided to drive up to the hills and walk around the neighborhoods instead. It felt like we were in Europe!

I'm wearing a 60s gold tassel necklace that used to belong to my grandmother - whenever I visit the East Coat my mum always sends me back to California with little things she has stashed away. I brought this back from my last visit home! The sailor sweater coat was from Zara a few months back. I love how different versions of this coat keep going down the Retail chain - A.P.C. started things off, then Top Shop made a version, next was Zara... Forevs 21 it's your turn now! The antique crocheted blouse/sweater was a Christmas gift from my boyfriend. I'd been staring at it on ebay for months and months - considering cashing out my life insurance policy to buy it (well, no not really... but maybe just a little) and well, I'm not quite sure what I did to deserve it, but here it is! And the early 40s pleated skirt was a Christmas gift from Emily. (it's actually a slip dress - there's a sheer nylon bodice attached that goes perfectly under sheer blouses, like that sweater!) Happy New Year!!!
I hope the start of 2011 has been good to everyone so far!! I spent last night in an extra shiny gold wiggle dress and I'm excited for whatever the new year has in store - even though it's an odd number (and I truly prefer even)

I'm very, very behind on updating about 2010 things so you'll have to bear with the mini-time warp over the next few posts... I've never been one for making or keeping resolutions, but I'm hoping to try and be generally better about things ... keeping this blog regularly updated is one of them!

Here are some photos from Ashley's vintage extravaganza shopping party she hosted a few weeks back! Ashley did a pretty great job with supplying the Holiday cheer (and pretty clothes!) and there were a whole lot of sweet people who came out.... some faces I bet you recognize!

I hope everyone is having a magical little day for themselves - filled with loved ones and cookies and chocolate and maybe a Christmas sweater or an Elvis Christmas carol or two!!

This is my second Christmas in SF ... away from the East Coast... It's really tough being away from family, but Christmas Eve was sort of really great!! A Westley walk to Grace Cathedral hill around 11:15 PM, for a gum drop tree photo shoot and then I wandered into midnight mass ... the cathedral was so pretty with the glowy lights and the frankincense rising up into the rafters. I've never been to a midnight mass before, and I've never actually been into Grace Cathedral ... I think last night was the perfect time to be there.

Today Westley and I are relaxing and eating our own treats respectively - freeze dried chicken for him, and Lacey's cookies for me! Even though my family is miles and miles away - I'm happy to have this little fur baby as my official present shredder!!

The Legion of Honor

Saturday was a really great day spent running around The Legion of Honor with Sonja. The weather was totally bizarre, when we got there it was foggy, then turned sunny, then turned foggy, and then then the sky was grey, red, and orange all at the same time. When I was running around in that polka dot dress, a live organist started playing Christmas songs and the fog was coming in and it was one of the strangest/best places I could have possibly been!!

These things will probably be going into the etsy shop tomorrow afternoon, I ran out of light today to photograph the polka dot dress so I guess I'll just wait and post it all at once. I'll have another update coming soon too ... I've been stashing some things away for a holiday pop-up shop happening on Friday hosted by my pal Ashley - and whatever doesn't sell after the party will make its way onto etsy. I'm having a hard time putting words to this post because everything that comes out sounds waaayy too sappy. But, it's hard not to dote on such pretty pictures taken by my pal Sonja. On top of being way too sweet and a million times cooler then I ever was during my teenage years - she has the very best blonde hairs I ever did see.

It's nice that we happen live in the same city too! Fingers crossed everything falls into place and Sonja and I get to take 1385 photos on Saturday... I have a small stash of extra pretty things I found in Boston that need proper photos taken before they find a new home..

Yesterday I stumbled upon 17 (of 18) volumes of Wild Flowers of America circa 1894.... 16 lithographed flowers in each volume and I feel like I could spend the rest of my afternoon taking pictures of the pretty details.. I'm going to be adding the plates to Libris Lunaria - Vol. 1 is already up... Vol. 2 is next!

Tender Cuts

When I first started selling vintage I noticed that so many of the collectors/sellers I'd meet always dressed so simply... And usually always in modern clothing. I didn't understand why, but I think I get it now... You start to feel guilty keeping things for yourself - and the ones that you do hold onto feel too precious to wear. I feel like more and more I'm having a hard time finding clothing for myself - and the things that I wear each day tend to be so boring.

I bought these floral shorts almost a year ago from the sweet Emily Bryngelson's clothing line, Tender Cuts and it's been one of my best non-vintage purchases! I also bought the white/black long sleeve blouse too and I can't even tell you how many times it's gotten me out of an outfit pinch. I've been meaning to use both the blouse and shorts for proper pictures ... but I suppose these blurry photos taken a few weeks ago will have to do for now.

Oh! And I'm back. Lazing about in bed with a scruffy white pup perfectly curled up to my right. I plan on spending my day packing up etsy orders and unpacking my suitcases. I'm feeling extra lazy though and any excuse to putz around on the computer whilst tucked under blankets is a-okay with me ... so I'm having two sales today!

My too short visit with family is almost up.. It's been a really nice week petting doggies, eating too much food, hanging with the coolest 3 year old niece ever, and folding my soon-to-be-here baby nephew's teeny tiny clothes - I think the miniatures socks kill me the most!!

Tomorrow I'll hopefully spend my last afternoon with my best girl digging around a big warehouse filled with pretty dresses. I have my finger's crossed I'll find some silky/lacy things like these underpinning blouses I found at the flea market a few months back. They sort of remind me of French macarons and I'm greedily keeping them until forever!

Well, the etsy shop has been re-stocked ... I'm amazed that I managed to do this entire update whilst manually focusing my camera ... it took 2x longer then normal to photograph - but I'm realllllly happy about my newfound photo location. Taking photos in my apartment was really bumming me out. I live in a courtyard facing apartment and in the Summer time when the light is at its brightest - I have about an hour and a half of good light each day. Now that the days are darker my photo time is cut down to about 30 minutes, if that. But, then I realized that this little window area just 15 feet down the hall from my door is perfect! And the light is nice all afternoon!

Today was a really sad day for me as far as camera stuff goes... my 35mm lens has been on the fritz for the past month and it officially bit the dust this afternoon. I can't decide if I want to try and get it fixed or maybe just buy a 50mm lens instead.. My computer has also seen better days, and of course I fell asleep watching Law & Order SVU on netflix watch it now and I woke up at 1:45 am to a loud thud, which was my knee pushing my computer 4 feet off the bed and onto the hardwood floor. Thankfully it's working still - but I fear its ultimate demise is quickly approaching.

Anywayyyy, here are some blurry photos from yesterday afternoon. The weather here has been so good, in the 70s!! It's been really great not to worry about tights and warm layers. My dress is a teeny tiny teenagers dress from the 30s that I found at the flea market. I can't actually snap the snaps shut, so a cardigan is mandatory. The shoesies are from Maria's lovely shop, Adelaide Homesewn.

Oh! and my backpack! A really lucky flea market find from last month when Alice was here with me.. It was supposed to be a birthday present for my boyfriend but, I haven't let him use it. Not even once.. Whoops!

A few different things from the past few weeks...... A ruffly cotton voille 30's dress with a pretty houndstooth-esque printed skirt. I wore it around on Halloween day, the weather was so perfect I didn't even need a sweater! I sort of gave up on shopping for myself and have just been sneakily taking a dress or two from the ones I find for the shop, this is one of them!

I've never seen this movie, but it looks so great! That little girl has the best autumn/winter clothing! And her hair! The cloth ribbon thing definitely looks much better on her and not so great with bangs.

And a gigantic 60s carpet suitcase I found at an estate sale. I once saw a similar bag at a store in Manhattan that was around $700 and it's haunted me ever since. Three years later I finally found one for what seems like chump change compared to the Manhattan price!

Two of my favorite prints in the Libris Lunaria shop ... from a British mycology book... There's 5 plates from that book in the shop and I think I have to add more, they're just so great!

I was planning on keeping things around here sleepy until after October 31st was over and done with.. I'm sort of a holiday grinch ... not because I don't like them - but, I think my expectations are always too high and unless I plan in advance, the day usually turns into a total bust. And well, I'm lazy... so advance preparation neverrrr happens.

Halloween this year has been no different - I wasn't planning on celebrating in any way shape or form, except for my binge eating of fun sized assorted candy last week ... and having Westley wear a bow tie around town.

But, then I was listening to The Caretaker on repeat and the idea of dressing up and getting out of the house didn't seem so bad. My boyfriend would play False Memory Syndrome and I always referred to it as ghost music. I really love it. It reminds me of empty ballrooms in abandoned mansions and all that kind of spooky stuff. So, it's been perfect for today.

I bought this floor length 30s chiffon dress at the flea market a few months ago and it seemed like tonight would be the best excuse to wear it. Some sort of old 30s Hollywood fancy ghost lady of sorts? I have no ideaaaaa but it's Halloween and I think that means anything goes!

I bought this dress at the flea market a few months ago and it's totally perfect to me. It's so simple but the construction details are what really get me. I wish I could find more like this...

One thing I really miss about Fall and living in Boston was that the prettiest light used to sneak in through the curtains in the mornings in my old apartment.. it's not quite as nice in San Francisco, but it's something.

. . . Floral Cigarette Cards . . .
I bought a a bunch of 30s/40s era cards on ebay a while back to tuck into etsy packages and I couldn't help but make myself a little collection for keeps. They came mailed in these clear plastic sheets, almost like for baseball cards - except they fit the cigarette cards perfectly and I get obsessive over rearranging the way that the cards are tucked into each page. I wish that these were bigger so I could frame them and put them all over the house!

But, one thing I do have to hang around the house are these nice gigantic rose prints I bought a few weeks ago at the flea market. I thought they were $20 each, but oh no.. It was $20 for a set of 6! One of my happiest flea finds! Here I have 5 of them lined up on the wall, but I've since spread them throughout the apartment.

Fall has finally settled into San Francisco.. at least I think this is Fall? I don't know, living on the West Coast this past year has totally messed my internal clock up. Either way, I'm feeling pretty uninspired by clothing lately. Instead of worrying about dresses and blouses and shoes and bags I've been thinking about my apartment and finding myself a little more interested in interior photos then usual..

A friend of mine forwarded this article to me and I've been thinking about it ever since. That first image is just amazing right?! Then I saw the photos from this Vogue Spain spread and the two seemed to fit so perfectly together. I sort of wish I could photoshop the model out of the pictures because the rooms are so pretty all on their own.

Estate sales ... man, what a totally scary thing to me. Things are just a total circus when you have a house full of old junk and free reign to rummage through as you please. I bet sample sales are equally terrifying. I've only ever been to two estate sales in my life, and yesterday was #2. But, I think I'm going to try and start making a thing of it. I think as long as you go in with low expectations then you can only be pleasantly surprised, right?

Here's some of the stuff I got yesterday from a house in Berkeley ... I haven't soaked anything yet, but as long as the sun comes out then it should find its way into the shop mid-week.

I've been sqaubbling my pennies away on silly things. So silly I really can't even figure out where those pennies are going. I think I've been eating too many chocolate covered gummy bears in combination with fancy macarons from Bouchon Bakery or something... BUT, the time has come for me to think about flying back to the East Coast - buying plane tickets is always so depressing for the piggy bank, especially when you're flying around the holidays. So, I'm having a flea market sale. Everything in the shop is up for grabs via 'make an offer' reasoning until Saturday evening. Things in there are already pretty darn cheap so that means they can only get cheaper!

Things have been mostly slow around this blog and the 1385 shop for a while... well, I plan on remedying the dress problem soon - a few new listings should hopefully be going up this evening once my boyfriend gets out of work and can help me take photos ... I have a few antique dresses that would be perfect for Halloween. Or maybe a wedding? Or maybe something entirely different! But, there's lace, chiffon, and satin involved and those things are always a good thing!

Besides funny old dresses, there's been a lot of lovely folks passing through town. Including two very special house guests snoozing on my couch.. And another lovely visitor who is making her way over here tomorrow! I also did a little photo shoot with Ashley, (real photos to come!).. I went to LA for a few days.. And lastly, spent way too much time at the SPCA with Westley for potential grape poising. After lots of puking/dry heaving and tests and more tests and of course $$$$$ - it looks like the little dude is going to be okay! But he really had us for quite the scare.

And then of course, Libris Lunaria is up and running!
There's a little over 20 prints to choose from - and there will definitely be a lot more to come!

Alexa Chung for Madewell

I don't normally buy newly made clothes, but I totally got hooked into the Alexa Chung for Madewell line. It's just so easy to wear on days where you can't be worried about what to wear! (basically my Monday-Friday) And it's nice to have an arsenal of easy dresses to just throw on when you need to leave in a rush.

Well, my parcel arrived today - it was a really intense 30 seconds of total utter happiness and then a major let down because unfortunately Madewell messed up my order. About a handful of phone calls later and all is fixed and the correct dress will be on its way to me tomorrow! But, I can't keep them both ... because that is crazy $$$ !!

So, here is a Tennesse Velvet Dotted dress up for grabs in a Size 0... I can definitely return it back to Madewell, but I know it's sold out online and figured rather then someone spending an extra $100 on ebay it'd be nice to be able to buy it for the normal retail price..

In the next few hours I'm going to stock the shop with some true goodies. Shades of pale pink, cream, and green... A really nice color palate for the end of Summer / early Autumn. This is one of the dresses that's making its way there.. a beautiful double layer organdy ballerina-esque dress that I bought for myself at La Rosa. No matter what I do I can't make it work for my stupid flat chest. It's a real stunner. Totally perfect in every way.

I want to introduce you to a new project my boyfriend and I have been working on together over the past few weeks...

. . . Libris Lunaria . . .

It's only an empty etsy shop right now - but in just a few weeks it'll be filled with beautiful, high quality reproductions of some of our favorite book images. Some that that we've been squirreling away, and some that I've shared on this blog. I always loved reading comments about how pretty the 'what genus are you' images would be framed on a wall and it's lovely to be able to make that happen now! (And to be able to selfishly print out pretty pictures for my own decorating purposes!)

We're starting out with 5"x7" prints carefully curated from images in the public domain. Special findings for your favorite spaces - either by themselves or in a collection. The shop will have a fine selection of horticulture, botany, science, astronomy, fauna, children's illustrations, and all eye catching things in between! A little something for everyone!

The prints will be made with rich pigment inks and printed on heavy weight matte paper. Packaged in clear plastic sleeves and shipped in rigid fiberboard mailers. Gussied up as if receiving a care package from a far away friend.

While Paul and I (and Westley too!) make like little worker bees to get everything in its place for our shop opening in 2-4 weeks, we wanted to offer pre-sales at a special rate!

Particulars:

Westley knows how to do two tricks. And when I say tricks I really just mean something besides sitting, sleeping and walking. He's really apathetic for the most part actually...

Here we have Exhibit A, Westley stands on his hinds in anticipation for his favorite treat, and the only thing that makes him excited - a greenie.

Exhibit B - Westley lays on his back for unusually long amounts of time whilst getting the city wiped off him with Earth Bath wipes. Extra points for magically morphing into a character from the Fantastic Mr. Fox.

We're currently working on "shake" ... but I expect a grim outcome since I gave up on "sit" back in July.

The weather has been so good here lately it's felt like a mini-vacation!! Consequently I haven't been getting much done and instead I've been going on as many iced coffee/iced tea walks as humanly possible and visiting Lafayette Park way more then I should. These photos are from a while back, from my flickr. An outfit that never made it out of the house due to the lack of sunshine and warm air - but today might even be too hot for long sleeves.

Recipes - Mint Lemonade

I'm using the word recipe really lightly here guys. This isn't an exact science and lemonade is one of those things that everyone has a different taste for.. So, these are my very loose guidelines on how to make it!

So, let me start out by saying that there are about a zillion different ways that you can fix lemonade. I've tried a few of them out and I always find that my favorites are the ones you get at county fairs that are shaken and simply involve a fresh squeezed lemon, water, and sugar. It's just a really nice lemonade that's equal parts sweet and sour and just the right consistency.. So, that's what I was trying to do with this recipe. Simple summer county fair lemonade, but with a little extra fanciness.

I have one of those 1L Weck carafes that has the sealable lid. This is great for both fridge and picnic use and I got mine for $8 from Heath Ceramics (the one at the Ferry Building) but, I'm sure you can find them even cheaper somewhere else... This is a really great thing to use for shaking your lemonade so that the sugar dissolves, but certainly - make do with what you have!

Ingredients:
- Lemons - I'd say 1 lemon per cup - I used 5 lemons for my 1L carafe - so I went a bit over .. but you can decide if you like it more mellow/more sour
- A few bunches of mint - you can use as much or as little as you prefer
- Sugar, to taste (I probably used about a cup for the 1L carafe)
- Water

What you'll need:
- Knife
- Lemon squeezer
- A deeper mortar and pestle ... or just a pestle and a bowl (the pestle is pretty important, it's going to be really hard to do your smashing without it, I've tried just using a wooden spoon and it's just not the same)
- A container with a good lid for shaking the lemonade, tupperware would do
- A sieve - this is handy for seed removal

To Make:
Rinse your mint in cold water and break it off the stems. I recommend cutting or ripping it down into smaller pieces, otherwise you're going to have a precarious drinking experience later with the large leaves. Set that aside in your mortar, or bowl.

Slice and juice lemons. Add the juice to the mint and add sugar.
Now smash it all to bits taking extra care to try and grind up that sugar into a syrup as best as you can.

Pour that into your carafe, add water until you reach about 1.5" from the top - and shake until you can no longer see sugar crystals.

That's all... I feel silly for even posting this it's so simple. But, its good and it's a lovely way to spend a summer afternoon!
You can get even fancier and add blueberries when you're smashing up the mint! Or skip the mint and just do blueberries!

Lomo (and digital) Adventures - Lands End

The very, very first time I went to San Francisco my boyfriend took me to this really nice little park called Lands End. It was literally the first thing I did after I landed (well, besides In N Out) and I haven't been back since. This past Tuesday was a pretty magical day. In fact, it might be the day I'll mark down as my favorite in all of my San Francisco history. It was hot. Like, 90s hot. And it stayed that way through the night. No fog, no mist, no wind. Just perfect East Coast summer weather, minus most of the humidity. It was a total freak show day because of course it's back to grey cold windy miserableness. But, in honor of the sun, I made mint lemonade. (a lazy recipe of sorts to come) and we went bak to Lands End for a crystal clear view of the Golden Gate Bridge. It's was perfect.

I'm wearing some tapestry flats from etsy and a 30s pink voile dress from ebay. There's a panel of horizontal pintucks all through the center and little lacey bits around the arms and neckline. It was cheap, but there were some issues - an unfinished hem and terrible blue ink stains all around the arms... After soaking it for 3 days in hot oxy clean baths the ink came up and I finallly got around to fixing the hem on Monday night. It's a size too big, but I don't care one bit!

Lomo Adventures: Fort Funston

My dance card has been full the past few weeks, it's been so nice! But, that also means I've been seriously neglecting this blog. There was a flurry of activity last week in my etsy store when I cleaned out my closet - but, it's been slow again the past few days. Not to worry - I have lots of photos for this blog and lots of dresses to come!

We'll start backwards and work our way forward! These photos were from a really nice afternoon spent with some friends visiting from NYC. The weather in San Francisco was sunny and lovely but when we got out towards Fort Funston it was so grey/windy/chilly...

There were all these funny hang gliders that kept buzzing in and out of the sky. It seems like fun, but I have a fear of falling.. being hooked into one of those seems like one of the worst things I can possibly imagine!

There's a magazine store in my neighborhood that sells back issues of popular magazines and my boyfriend has amassed this beautiful stack of old copies of The World of Interiors. I think it's safe to say that it's probably my favorite magazine .. but I never look at them. Funny to say something is your favorite but never even thumb through it. But, it's like they're too good and I know I'll get crazy obsessive over it. I even have the stack on the very top shelf to keep myself away.

Well, I think it's time to get over my weird thing, give the book shelf a makeover and get those magazines a good home on the bottom shelf. I'm hoping to do a little weekly series (maybe bi-weekly though?) of scans from the stack.

26 years later (this spread is older then me!) and these bags look like something that would still be featured today. I guess that's why I like World of Interiors so much. A steadily beautiful and classic aesthetic that transcends time and trends... Well, except that backdrop. Kind of wish they would have stuck with a more neutral color - but, whatever.. it was the 80s.

Jack London State Park

This past Sunday my boyfriend, Westley (the pup!), and I scooted out of San Francisco and drove up to the Jack London State Park in Sonoma for a much needed warmer weather afternoon. There were errands to do in the city in the morning, and terrible traffic trying to get to/over the Golden Gate Bridge so we got there with only 2 hours to spare before the park closed. I took photos with my lomo but I haven't been having much luck with it lately. Two rolls wasted on dead batteries (including photos from this day) and then I forgot to change the ISO setting when I put a new roll of film in on Sunday - so I can't imagine any of those photos are going to come out well - but, we did take some digital photos!

It would have been a perfect two hours if it weren't for the little burrs all over the paths that got stuck all over Westley. I must have pulled at least 50 out of his fur on the car ride home!

I don't know who these ladies are - I found their photos in a shirt box with some black construction paper photo albums that belonged to my grandmother. I'm guessing they must be old friends. I really like them though - and I really like that the pictures were probably considered mess-ups.

Summer Homes

When I was in Massachusetts I got major hungry eyes for lake side, clothes line living. Like, bad. I have a few nice photos from my maternal grandparents when they were first married that I have to scan in that involve a black scottie pup named Bootise and some equally humble and charming clothes lines ... but, I just want to share with you some photos that I can't stop going back to. As if the fine little day blog wasn't lovely enough, she now has the most perfect summer home.

Nothing too exciting to report today. Packing etsy orders and wearing an unconventional dress for the weather. I've spent most of this week in my RRL jeans and old crew neck sweatshirts with perpetualy frozen feet. The weather has been so cold I've thought it was September since August 2nd and I've forgotten what it's like to be hot. Dude, what the heck SF? So, today I'm pretending it's warmer then it is. Wearing this white 40s dress I bought on Sunday. Tiny little tan dots and beautiful shirring along the waist and neck. It has some rips that were daintily mended and more rips that I need to mend in the sleeve. It was $5. I truly love old busted up dresses. I've been listening to this song way too much and eating too many cookies from Trader Joe's. I recommend the Lacey's. Right now is the time of the day when the heat comes on and our pale pink radiator makes clanking noises. As if some little man was in there chiseling away at a sculpture. Westley hates it and barks until it stops. Every day. Tomorrow a very kind girl named Sonja is coming over to help me with shop photos and then Saturday another very kind girl who I'm happy to have as a pal is coming to help sew. I'm planning an escape from the city for Sunday. Shop update on Monday? Who knows...

Well, finally the shop update is done! I'm sorry it ended up being split into two days... I told you it was the shop update that never ends!

This photo is of a silly little outfit I threw on after I was done taking photos in some of the dresses. The pants are these totally bizarro corduroys I bought in Portland a while back. They're so wide they remind me of circus pants.. I think I want to make them into shorts but I can't decide. The top I picked up on Sunday at the flea market. It has this gorgeous theater curtain stitching on the sleeves. You can't see it so well so I need to make a proper outfit with it later on!

I've been working on the same etsy update for the past week... I think I'm eternally slow and behind in everything. I'll hopefully have 8 heartbreakingly beautiful things up tonight though. I know that's a tall glass to fill, but I promise this stuff's gooood. I want to keep it all but instead I've just taken 3x the amount of photos I actually need.

Above you have a practically perfect lace 1920s drop waist dress. And below a late 1940s Henry Rosenfeld. I'm slightly obsessed with everything about it. I couldn't stop taking photos in it... It's moved along through the years so elegantly.

Tomorrow I'm making myself sew until my fingers stop working. I have 15 or so printed cotton dresses that need so much stitching and if I keep working at this pace then I'm going to have them up by Christmas. Speaking of - is there anyone who might be interested in potentially working for store credit tomorrow? Nimble and skillful hand sewing fingers or a portable sewing machine is a must! (I'm unfortunately without the later and I know that I should get a sewing machine, I know - I know... but I'd just rather buy dresses and frilly things instead...) What Genus are you?

Today's long lost installment of the What Genus Are You? series is a funny little book called Flower children; the little cousins of the field and garden. The book was published in 1910 and the series goes on to include a book about anthropomorphic birds, ad well as fruits and vegetables (both of which I will certainly share with you!) There is some truly amazing monochromatic leg wear going on throughout the book ... You should definitely click on the link above to look through the rest of the pages. The little outfits are all just sweet as can be, but I'm not so taken with some of the more cherub-like illustration styles.... I guess you can't have it all.

And happy first day of August! When I was still in school I remember equally loving/dreading the arrival of my birthday. With it being tucked towards the end of July it meant that by the time August rolls around it's time to pick out new backpacks and get serious about that Summer reading. Isn't it funny I still dread seeing the 'back to school' displays...

I've had these photos tucked away for a while in my book case but finally I felt like pulling out the scanner tonight and working out all the software bugs.... there are so, so many family photos to come!

Tadich Grill

I wanted to post some photos from lunch on Tuesday at Tadich Grill, the oldest restaurant in San Francisco. Apparently it was established in 1849, although the location on California is definitely not the original spot. I don't know if I can officially back this spot up as a, 'Places to Visit' worthy restaurant but - it's definitely of note. It's truly an old fashioned, no frills kind of place. I don't know what dinner is like, but at noon it's a very boy's club high power business exec. lunch meeting type of place. Interpret that to be good or bad as you wish.

The menu is predominately seafood based, of course I'm really allergic to seafood, but I mostly just wanted to go here for the interiors - dark wood and the Art Deco light fixtures. If I wasn't wearing my pink 20s dress that day (the weather was truly just too chilly for it) then at least I could spend some time in a place that reminded me of the 20s. And they call themselves "The Original Cold Day Restaurant" - pretty perfect for my 30s tweed fox hunting coat and a chilly over cast early afternoon.

I tried to take as many sneaky photos as I could - but there's so many waiters walking around all the time it was hard not to feel like a tourist. Here's a photo I stole from yelp - I wish we would have eaten lunch at that bar instead of at a table, but maybe next time...

I think this year will be a good one... It definitely started out differently. No grandeur adventures this year. Instead a hodge podge mish mash of errands and lovely little things. Cold weather mornings and fancy lunches at the Tadich Grill. Shopping around Haight Street - where I found an amazing 30s/40s faded cotton paisley peter pan smock shirt that works as a 60s esque mini. I ended up wearing it last night to the party instead of my 20s dress... Speaking of, photos of party things to come! Although, I didn't really worry about taking pictures yesterday, I just let the day happen as it may. It felt nice. I did brake my tradition of wearing a 20s dress for all my 'twenties' birthdays and taking proper pictures, but I think that's okay too.

...And I'm back. What a whirlwind July has been - and it's not over! But, at least I'm back in San Francisco and can start slowly settling myself back into the normalcy of things. I have about 5 zillion things to take care of. Emails.. etsy messages.. sewing.. washing.. picture taking.. etsy listings.. sleeping - but it'll have to wait until Wednesday. Tomorrow is my birthday and today I plan on sprucing up my apartment (for a teeny tiny cupcake/prosecco party) and hopefully finding a bow tie for Westley to wear tomorrow... something barber shop/Gatsby lawn picnic appropriate to go with my pink 20s dress. The weather might be totally wretched here right now for me to run around in a thin, sheer dress - but dang it - Westley will wear a bow tie!

In other non-weather clothing related woes, I'm having the pre-birthday crazies. I just chopped more layers into my hair and I'm seriously considering walking to Walgreens and buying a box of hair dye. I know how damaging drug store hair dye is for your hair, so I won't actually go through with it ... but I'm really itching to change my hair color to something more golden. I found a box of photos of my mom in the late 60s/early 70s and I'm having major hair envy. I took photos of the photos, but I really should wait to share them until I scan them in properly... Brimfield in July

Brimfield. The Big Flea as some call it... I went once, I think in high school and I swore never again. Too big, too expensive... no fun. But then all of a sudden it got really popular in blog land... Which is funny to me because I grew up so close... How could something so close to my little old home town be worthy of an Olsen twin making the journey from NYC? Totes cray cray, right?
So, for the past year or so I thought maybe I should give it a second chance... Even though I knoww that vendors pretty much double their normal prices and there's a whole slew of corporate chain store gremlins roaming around trying to grab everything before you do. But, it's so close to my mum and dad - and it's a huge flea market - why wouldn't I want to go?

Alice shares the same "to Brimfield, or not to Brimfield?" views as me ... but I somehow convinced her with good 'ol fashioned enthusiasm (I think I was also trying to convince myself a little too...) and we promised we'd act casual about this. We'd get there early but we weren't trying to be up with the sun and we weren't going to get stressed if our dream objects were sold to someone else from right under our nose. Whatever is whatever ... just go, check it out - no biggie.

The night before as I was planning our attack (what fields were a must to visit, where to park..) my parents suggested we take their Radio Flyer wagon. Which was a savior - and I am pretty sure that I need to bring a wagon to all flea markets from here on out. No more tired shoulders! And we sort of managed to beat the heat delirium with an ice cold cooler full of snacks and drinks.

We spent about 7 hours walking around. And even ran into Jeff! We covered a lot of ground, but it's just impossible to do it all in one day (which is why it's 6 days long)

To be honest - I wasn't really wow'd by too much. A lot of the vendors had more of a 'dirt merchant' vibe rather than 'collector and seller of the most beautiful objects' ... But, I think it's just the time of the year. No one wants to deal with the heat and humidity that is July and I think all the vendors pull out the good stuff for the May/September shows when there's way more people who come out.

There was one booth that I spent too much time in, and of course I found a few nice things to take home...

Sadly I totally ruined that quilt when cleaning it - so instead of selling it on etsy I'm going to tuck it away and save it for the next time I'm in New England and want to go on a warm weather adventure.

I'm heading back to San Francisco on Thursday night with my parents and Westley in tow and I have a whole lot of things to do before then. Lots of things for the etsy shop need to be cleaned and fixed up - so I best be off to take care of business!

Summer Dresses

Hi! Things are snailishly slow around here. I don't know if they'll get better any time soon - but in the mean time, I have a few dresses I want to offer up for sale. 4 cherished, tried and true summer dresses. I'm crazy to part with them, but I brought about 20 with me on this trip and I know I'll be accumulating more this week.. Brimfield!
I'm sorry for the size discrimination ... they're all Extra Smalls, so if you're like me and cursed with a flat chest then this is your lucky day! Those of you who have real lady curves, I promise I'm collecting a range of sizes for the shop re-opening at the end of the month! (I have about 15 pieces so far - lots of late 40s/early 50s dresses! A tree novelty print and a few nice plaids!)

I have a whole bunch of home items that I left here when I moved to San Francisco that I should go through and part with as well.... I have an entire room filled at my grandmother's house with those big plastic boxes and there's no way to even walk through there. I'm worried this might be the onset of a hoarder life... My junk is just spread out all across the country!

Today is my last full day in San Francisco before leaving for my Massachusetts July summer vacation. The weather has been really foggy and pretty cold, but today wad finally nice enough to wear my new dress! I found it on ebay in the Edwardian section, and it came all the way from France! I don't normally buy things if they're coming from another county (I'm too impatient to wait for the shipping) But, everything just sounds so much nicer when the word 'France' or 'French' is in the listing title, why is that?! It also reminded me of those nice Burberry ones that cost a fortune... This one was $30 with free shipping!

I'm also wearing a hat. Which, is weird. I don't wear hats. I just feel strange in them. I've had this one hanging around for a while and I figured it was time to take it out today.

Today was spent mostly running about doing little un-important errands. I took a few lomo photos while we were out and about around the city - but for good measure I wanted to take a few digital photos in our courtyard. We were hoping that Westley would be able to run around a bit while we snapped photos, but the little Peter Rabbit rascal kept trying to wiggle through the gate and get back into the basement of our apartment building. The basement is where all the trash/recycling is held so it's basically every dog's dream buffet.

He also got himself a little summer haircut yesterday to prepare for the insanity that is East Coast summer humid heat. I miss his old fox face terribly, but I know it's for the best... Hopefuly that hair will grow quick though!

I have that roll of film to develop, but I have so many things I haven't done yet that I should probably wait until I get back to MA to have it done.. In the mean time - I hope everyone is well and enjoying summer!

2 Months !

Today is Westley's 2 month adoption birthday! I can't believe it's been 2 months already!! To celebrate I bought him a new stuffed pheasant toy and some treats that are okay for his special allergy diet. He eats duck and potatoes (in pup food form) for every meal and I wanted to go out and get some real duck for him tonight, but maybe we'll put on the ritz for his 1 year!

Blouse Rack

Nothing very exciting has happened around here worthy of photographing. No cool day trips, nice outfits, new findings... Nothin'.
No. Wait. I take that back I found this nice rack at a garage sale in my neighborhood last weekend. I was hoping to make the designated 1385 rack, but it's too short. So, I put my blouses and shorter jackets on it.

It's sitting in my living room because well, I have a bunch of boxes and random things I didn't feel like dealing after unpacking (10 months ago...) that are piling up on my closet. Trying to slowly clean that out ... And in the mean time I've ruthlessly parted with some nice things that are now on etsy. Lots of random things. Hopefully more tomorrow! Who knows.

But tomorrow there will definitely be lots and lots of photos of this little white flufferpup!

New Additions

I seem to be finding a lot of nice blouses lately, which I've been really excited about! It's a nice change from wearing dresses. But, I have to say I have a truly pathetic skirt collection and I've come up totally empty handed the past couple of weeks searching on ebay/etsy. The blouses though, they seem to be in abundance! I'm really excited about this sweet 30s netting/ruffle puffer sleeve I got in an Edwardian lot on ebay. There was a lacey 50s blouse and 2 Edwardian blouses that'll be making their way onto etsy soon enough.

This past Sunday was the Alameda flea market. Probably the thing I look forward to the most each month. I usually like to leave my apartment around 6:30/7 to get there nice and early before all the good stuff is gone and there's too many people to weave around. Well.. I woke up late this week, and then last minute we decided to bring Westley so he could go for a nice long walk while I shopped and by the time I finally got there it was past 9 o'clock... I wasn't expecting to find much. All of the good reasonably priced things were probably scooped up by the time I was making the rounds... But I was happily surprised to find two of my favorite flea market finds, ever! And it was almost immediately upon getting there, just right in the center aisle row...

Two silk chiffon blouses in practically perfect condition ... for $20 each... $40 total for silk chiffon with amaaazing needle work! What the what !? The lady I bought them from was my ideal flea market vendor. Really sweet, an amazing collection of things, fully aware of the gems she had but willing to part with them for reasonable prices. She used to wear the blouses when she was my age and they smelled like jasmine when I was steaming them out. Perfect.

They're so similar to the silk chiffon Lyell blouses from the current Spring collection, at 1/26 of the price! So happy these found their way to me!!!

cupcakes, garden roses and seahorses

Yesterday was Meggy's birthday! So to help her celebrate I made red velvet cupcakes (with the Sprinkles cake mix) and home made cream cheese frosting. It was definitely my first attempt at making cupcakes. I was more or less prepared to except defeat as soon as I started, but I was pretty happy with how they turned out! It was also my first attempt at applying frosting and that turned out okayy. I need to practice ... I would also like a kitchen aid mixer for future attempts ... But I don't see one entering my life for another few years.

I would also like to say that this cut garden rose has changed my thoughts on keeping roses in the house and more or less changed my daily life routine a bit. It smells SO beautiful. I move it around with me depending on what room I'll be in. Above the sink while I'm washing dishes. On the table when I'm doing computer work. I would make my own rose water with it if I could ever bring myself to take those petals apart. The thought of having my own little dirt road cottage is seeming even lovelier if I could only have a few bushes of these around!

That JHP seahorse cuff is something I'm really excited to have in my life! One of the elusive Jean Painlevé seahorse jewelry pieces they made in the 30s. This is my second piece, I have a brooch as well and I'd really love to keep building my collection. This one is beautiful with seafoam bakelite and a perfectly un-perfect patina. I don't normally wear bracelets but this one feels really perfect on my wrist.

William Morris

About a zillion years ago, my mom and I went on a day trip to Newport, RI. If you're from the East Coast you'll know that Newport is probably the beautiful Summer mansion homes of forgotten billionaires Capital of the US. It's also home to the Newport Folk Festival. And the Skoal Room, where my dad's 60s garage band used to play during the busy summer tourist season.

Anyway, my mum and I visited the Chateau-sur-Mer and I fell head over heels for a lot of the stuff in that house. So much of it was brought over the Atlantic and there was a strong theme of William Morris and the Arts and Crafts movement throughout.

The pieces in the house were beautiful, but I think I fell in love with the ideas of the movement more then anything. People were fed up with that was being produced in bulk by machines and instead wanted to shift back to original designs created by a skilled hand.

One of my very favorite blogs, The Textile Blog posted some of William Morris' original artwork and I couldn't help but re-post some of the images. They make me totally weak in the knees while pulling on every heartstring.

This is my mum at the tender age of 19. Looking like a total beach babe and I can't get over how dang cute she was. I've had this photo scanned in for a long time - but it somehow disappeared (I could have sworn it was on flickr!) I finally found it today in the depths of my hard drive.

It's funny - as I'm getting a little older I feel like I'm finally figuring out my personal style. And I've also realized my mum has been my biggest influence. From the way she dressed when she was my age to the things I surround myself with in my apartment. My lace dress obsession definitely comes from her... that's just the start of it. And you know, all of those funny little things she used to tell me that I would just shrug off are finally clicking in. (right now it's been to wear more shades of pink and white and to keep my hair long!) I guess this is what happens when you grow up a little bit.

Well, anyway - after looking at this photo for a little while I realized my mom has the most AMAZING tote bag in existence. Creamy white, with the perfect shade of dark brown leather crisscross straps... And so my search is on for a bag like this. I'm hoping my mom can clue me in to where she got it/what brand it was - but in the mean time, if any of you lovely ladies find something similar in your internet/real life searches - please, please let me know!!! (I'll also take a navy blue/white dot bikini like that but I'm not pushing my luck!)

Pink Dresses

I was trying to clean up my desktop this morning and I saw a folder that's been sitting around for a while, Pink Dresses. I had a roll of film that was almost ready to be developed but there was just a few pictures at the end that weren't snapped. Instead of just pointing at nothing and twisting the wheel, I pulled out two of my favorite old dresses.

After the photos came back I thought it might be nice to take more photos of my other pink dresses. But... that was a few months ago and I almost forgot these photos even existed until this morning! Maybe someday ...

Strawberry season

It's that time of the year.... Strawberry season: the good days. When the summer's just starting and it's totally acceptable to spend a lazy weekend with red fingertips and little stains on the front of your dress/shorts/bathing suit. Maybe even preferred? As long as I can remember the first weekend in June is always a scorcher on the East Coast. The weather is a bit different in San Francisco, but the forecast is predicting 70s and I'm totally okay with that.

And I'm totally okay with the fact that these strawberries I picked up this morning will probably be gone by tomorrow morning. I had somehow forgotten they were in season but was happily reminded when I saw all the little open green pints lined up at the market. 3 for $10 and I have to say, it was a pretty darn great investment.

Today I woke up wishing I was a ballerina.

Tara-Lynn's post yesterday about New York City ballerinas of the 1960's struck a chord... I found myself looking through some of her other ballerina photos this morning and then I immediately went into my closet and tried to find something with a nice scoop neck and a good flowey skirt. I almost came up empty handed but then I remembered I bought this pink swiss dot 30s dress at Alameda last month.

It's been sitting in a wrinkled, sad mess for the past few weeks. There's split seams everywhere, and little rips and tears throughout the fabric - it's beyond repair, but it's still wearable and I prefer things a little tattered anyway. It actually used to be floor length until I chopped a few inches off this morning - I didn't feel bad doing it and I don't think I'll ever bother finishing the hem.

Hi everyone!
Here is a little schedule for how things will be running over at my etsy shop for the next 2 months or so ... Which seems like a long time in advance, but time is moving along so quickly lately!

I'm planning a long trip to New England at the end of June and I'll be there until probably late July. During that time the shop will be in vacation mode (I'd love to be able to keep it open but there's too many family things going on it'd be impossible for me to keep up!) so I want to make sure everything has found a home with someone before I leave. (I'll be bringing back new findings and there's not enough space in my tiny apartment for everything!!)

Leaving for almost a month means lots of planning and loose ends to tie up in San Francisco (plus I'm taking Westley with me and I've never flown with a dog before) so to make sure I don't have too much etsy shop stress before I leave I'm going to start now by having a flea market sale!

- From now until Thursday evening at 6:00 PM Pacific everything is up for grabs. Please understand that there are a few things that I can't budge toooo much on... But, I do want to make sure mostly everything is gone by Thursday!

- Pick your fancy from my shop and send me a message with an offer price. I'll write you back and either accept that price or offer a different one. If you agree on that price then I'll reserve the Item for you!

- Since I'm running the sale for almost a week, the only catch is that I'll be offering only a 24 hour reserve period for the item(s). So it has to be purchased and paid for within 24 hours otherwise it'll go back up for grabs.

- And of course the golden rule of the flea market applies - the more you buy the more you save - so don't be shy and shop away!

Then on Friday I'll be adding some of my own printed cotton summer dresses to the shop and then Alameda flea market loot will be added sometime after June 9th/10th.
