What Genus are you?
Today's long lost installment of the What Genus Are You? series is a funny little book called Flower children; the little cousins of the field and garden. The book was published in 1910 and the series goes on to include a book about anthropomorphic birds, ad well as fruits and vegetables (both of which I will certainly share with you!) There is some truly amazing monochromatic leg wear going on throughout the book ... You should definitely click on the link above to look through the rest of the pages. The little outfits are all just sweet as can be, but I'm not so taken with some of the more cherub-like illustration styles.... I guess you can't have it all.
I had a collection of these drawings as a kid. I was obsessed with plants.

Is it weird that I think I'd wear the scarlet poppy dress? Like, in a heartbeat.
ReplyDelete(fairies are so fun, btw. We did a fairy garden project at the school where I work and the older kids had so much fun building things for the little kids.)

ReplyDeleteHi! I've been reading for a while but I think this is my first comment. I love this post so hard because I have those books! Birds, flowers and veggies! I recently came across new print editions of them. Mine are my mom's, so 1950s editions I think. They're to die for, thanks for sharing!

ReplyDeleteHer flower children are a little more childlike (no heels). I just love the sweet simplicity, and the story of how the seasons change with the help of these little folks. I had this in an incredible accordian-style edition which I can't seem to find anywhere. It was one of my special kid things.
My father-in-law had the Olfers Root Children when he was small and was delighted when my mother-in-law got hold of more recent publications! I didn't know they'd been printed in English, I only know them in German, but they are very sweet, you'd like them!
