pups and plants

Well, this was a busy little week for me! Last Sunday we decided to adopt an old man West Highland Terrier named Westley from the SF SPCA. He's 8 years old and he's my new pal. He follows me around everywhere and he's as sweet as can be.

Westley the Westie

He's got some bad allergies and skin problems. He's currently on a strict diet and has anti-itch pills and medicated baths and ointment for infected bumps... awh, poor guy. We went to see a dermatologist on Thursday so hopefully he'll be feeling a lot better soon!

Etsy and Westley

I have to say, working at home has also been a lot more awesome! I now have an etsy friend and someone to walk with me to the post office! And I've been getting out and about more ... exploring things in my neighborhood that I've never seen before... Like this nice pastel hobbit door..

favorite door

And a nice peeley old church...

always curious

My favorite neighbors are moving this weekend and we also ended up with all their house plants! Which is lovely because finding some nice plants for our fire escape has been on my to-do list ... but, I never knew what to get or where to get 'em

new plants!

While I was out watering/pruning yesterday Westley sat impatiently on the bed whining and trying to hop out there. He's got some separation anxiety... But, he was a pound pup after all, so I can't blame him!

  1. Adoption is the best! I adopted my Silky Terrier a year and a half ago and he overcame many of his health issues faster than we expected. Your doggie is so cute too :)

  5. Hi,
I've never commented before but have read your blog for a while. I just wanted to recommend accupuncture for your pup. I know it sounds a bit kooky but I knew an old dachshund with similar problems and his owner took him to get it somewhere in SF and it worked wonders on him, he looked like a puppy again. It was pretty amazing actually. Anyway, good luck with him, he's a cutie pie.

  9. Oh he is so sweet! I've loved seeing your pictures of him on flickr as they popped up--he is just the most adorable little guy! I hope he feels better soon <3

My dad is the biggest green thumb ever. When we lived in an old brownstone in our area he had the best windowboxes, which I kind of miss. He keeps plastic bags and shovels in his trunk so when he sees wild plants he likes he takes a little bit and coaxes them into growing. We get wild morning glories that way, and lots of nice ferns and things.

I suspect it might be something we're not supposed to to, but he takes just a little bit, one root or sprig, sometimes collects seeds if the time of year is right, and makes sure not to hurt anything. Scientist dad are funny! But it's a good way to get some plants :p

  14. You're so lucky that you're allowed to have a dog. It's hard to find places that will allow it. Matthew and I would love to adopt a Boston Terrier but our landlord won't allow it. I'm not sure our two kitties would either! haha. Really lovely pics. I'm glad it's been nice and sunny and good for doggy walking. :D

  15. I think it is so, so great that you not only adopted an older dog, but one with a few problems that probably made other people pass over him. You rock!

  17. Oh my gosh...he's SO cute!! Ahhh! Dogs with wirey hair really are the cutest, it makes them look like muppets. I've heard that natural soaps made with oatmeal are good for doggy skin too.

    Hooray for friends!

  19. Oh my goodness - that pup-on-a-quilt picture is a killer. :)

We had a Westie when I was little, but she wasn't as adorable a ragamuffin as your fella.

I'm so glad you have a little pal to keep you company! My (rotten) cat made working at home all the better for me, too.

  26. these are gorgeous photos. it's so wonderful that you've adopted an older guy (and such a handsome one at that!); everyone always wants puppies, but the older ones are already ready-to-go, you know?

i feed my dogs an all-raw-meat diet now - no more allergies. anyways, a change in diet is something to think about maybe? (better than medication IMO, if you can help it).

  28. Awww Westley is adorable! I'm a vet nurse & I love it when older pooches are adopted, its so sad when they can't find homes because of their age and/or medical problems. Glad his visit to the dermatologist went well, with the right medications they do really well! My boyf loves westies so I showed him this post & he too thinks Westley is gorgeous! :D

    Beautiful photos :)

  29. I think it's wonderful that you found yourselves a dog at the RSPCA. It makes me really mad how animals end up in shelters.

Our previous cat, Coco the burmese, was a rescue cat. He was the most loving boy - eva!!

  35. Aw, congratulations for Westley! He looks like a real sweetie!<3

Love your new garden! I don't know if I could survive living in the city without my fire escape jungle.

That "peeley church" isn't on Hyde Street, is it? Looks familiar.

  39. Awww, Westley is the cutest! I have a 7-y.o. Westie (named Duffy). They are the sweetest, most loving dogs. Mine has skin problems too (apparently that's common in the breed) AND has separation anxieties, but he was NOT a pound dog. I'm not sure why they're like that, except for because they just love us so much! Congrats on your new buddy!!

  40. What a cutie!!! My parents have 2 Westies, and I have a Rat Terrier, love the terrier family! Such personalities and such loyal little companions. Our dog has really bad skin allergies and we've found that putting a few pumps of fish oil on his food (Avoderm) every day really helped a lot. You can find this stuff at pet stores. It didn't 'cure' but it definitely lessened the agony. Have fun with your new guy!

  41. We adopted two sick old man terriers about six ago, they had bad skin problems and allergies. Prescription food and lots of fresh baby carrots (we've had to change to canned vegies, carrots and peas, as their teeth are not great anymore), and of course medication helped tremendously. Today, Bert and Ernie are happy sweet and very loved very old men. I can't imagine life without them! Enjoy your pup!

  52. what a darling little man! many kudos to you for adopting an older dog who really needed a home. Hopefully his skin will clear up to - sometimes it's related to anxiety. Our kitty's skin cleared up within a month of living with us because she was so much calmer and happier living in a home with people who wanted and loved her.

  53. You are the sweetest to take on an older pound puppy, especially one with some skin problems and such. He is so adorable. Love the pics :)

  58. I have a Westie. Separation anxiety is a Westie personality trait, they are such people lovers and crave companionship. Great dogs, gongrats on the adoption!
